How to Help Students with Listening. Useful Tips.

1. Encourage students to listen to English as much as they can outside the class, e.g. films, TV, radio, songs, and use these regularly in the class.
Students are very keen on working out the words to current pop songs; you can make this easier by providing the words but with some blanked out and getting the students to fill in the blanks as they listen. Choose songs with clear, meaningful words.

2. It is important to give students lots of practice in doing listening tasks in order for them to get used to listening tasks and carrying out the comprehension task at the same time. If students are completely familiar with the procedure for doing tasks, they will be able to concentrate fully on the listening material.

3. Always get the students to read the questions before doing a listening task.

4. Always get students to give reasons for their answers during feedback. They will probably find it
difficult to note down key phrases as they are listening, but the knowledge that they will be asked to prove their answers acts as an important focusing motive.
